A New Play by Lancaster Playwright Gwen Tulin!
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform presents a reading of Good Mothers, a new play by local playwright, Gwen Tulin, on Friday, November 6th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Pearl Café, 420 Pearl, St., Lancaster, PA.
The performance is co-produced by Creative Works of Lancaster, the non-profit arts company that oversees the Dramatists’ Platform. Last year, Creative Works produced Tulin’s first play, Dead Inside, which went on to be presented by the Ephrata Performing Arts Center.
In Good Mothers, Tulin traverses similar themes to her 2025 work – parenting, trauma, and the family – but with a sharper dramatic cunning, and a clearer sense of her own darkly comedic voice.
“Dead Inside worked really well with our audiences, and I’m glad we got to explore it in two very different venues. It hit on the pain of loss within a family, but in a relatable way, with a lot of humor and heart,” says Lydia Brubaker, Executive Director of Creative Works, who directed Dead Inside and will direct the upcoming reading. “When I read this script, I knew the earlier play was the training Gwen needed for the craft, tragedy, and hilarity in Good Mothers.”
Running at about 75-80 minutes, Good Mothers centers on a modern family haunted by a child whose pain can never be forgotten, ignored, or belittled. It’s ultimately about what it really means to be a good mother when love, protection, failure, and damage are all dealt from the same hand.
Gwen Tulin is a writer, performer, and teaching artist now based in Central Pennsylvania. Her 10-minute plays have been produced at a variety of theaters across the United States.
Primarily an actor and music director, her writing is hyper-contemporary, fast-paced, and written with relationships at the core of the story. Gwen recently completed her MFA in Pedagogy and Dramatic Writing at the University of Idaho, and is currently developing two new full length plays. (gwentulin.com)
