Live theater is a vibrant and collaborative art, different from all other art forms. Its immediacy, happening right before the eyes of audiences, makes it an expression of now.
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform is dedicated to fostering the “now” by supporting the primary source of theater: the playwrights. If we want theater to continue to speak for all generations, be relevant to modern audiences, and attract new patrons, there must be writers today writing about problems, issues and characters of the 21st century. It is for this reason that the Platform exists: to provide opportunities for playwrights in Lancaster and the surrounding communities, to give them feedback for improving their art and to help find venues for getting their work before audiences.
Currently the Platform assists its writer members in two ways:
- Regular meetings of the playwright members in which plays are read and feedback is given in the hope that it will benefit the writer and the play.
- Staged readings before audiences, at which playwrights get to see their words performed by actors, see how theater patrons respond, and learn more about the process of theater beyond the printed page.
In the future, the Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform would like to expand the scope of opportunities for its members. Possibilities include open rehearsals, submission assistance, and even full productions.
